We have yet to see figures for the number of viewers tuning into the Provincial GAA Finals or the Heineken Champions Cup at the weekend but it is unlikely they will get close to the number that watched Liverpool’s defeat in the Champions League Final.

The game was delayed by half an hour due to problems getting fans into the ground and that may have given more time for people to get back from other sporting activities so that in the end an average audience of 573,000 tuned in to the RTÉ coverage.

The number peaked at 694,000* at 10.30 pm as the game drew to a close and Real Madrid clung onto their one-nil advantage.

Over half of all those watching television at the time (50.2%*) were tuned in to the game.

This is the first year that the Champions League Final will make it into the Top 50 Most watched programmes of the year since 2018 when the same two teams fought out the final and Madrid once more came out on top.

Since then Liverpool’s ties against Roma and Barcelona have featured but not the final.
