Mayo and Kerry will bring Gaelic football to London later this year for a special exhibition match at StoneX Stadium on Saturday, November 28.
The JRL Group Presents Mayo Kerry Global Series will reunite the counties following their meeting in this year’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final.
GAA Central Council has approved the fixture, and it is being promoted as both a major sporting occasion and a celebration of the Irish community in Britain.
JRL Group has signed on as presenting partner, with further commercial partnerships, ticketing details and supporting events to be announced over the coming weeks.
StoneX Stadium, the home of Saracens Rugby, will be specially configured for Gaelic football. Details of the playing surface and dimensions have yet to be confirmed. The venue includes an athletics track surrounding its rugby pitch, providing organisers with a larger overall footprint from which to create the required playing area.
Our own doodling suggests they can get to a pitch size that won’t quite match Croke Park but will be close enough to allow a realistic 15-a-side game.
Both counties will look to engage supporters outside Ireland and to build new relationships with businesses serving the substantial Irish community in London.
“It’s a really exciting one for us, bringing Kerry and Mayo back together following this year’s All-Ireland Final, but this time in London, with a big focus on the Irish community and diaspora there,” Maura Ashe, Commercial Director at Kerry GAA, told us last night.
Sport for Business Perspective
This is a great test of the appetite for taking high-profile intercounty Gaelic games beyond Ireland without waiting for a championship fixture.
JRL Group’s involvement as presenting partner gives the event a strong commercial foundation and reflects the value of the Irish business network in Britain. Further opportunities will emerge across travel, hospitality, broadcast, community engagement, and supporting events around the match.
Choosing two counties with large, highly engaged supporter bases is important, another gift from one of the greatest All-Ireland Finals from a story perspective, at least in living memory. Imagine the Green and Red of Mayo and the Rose of Tralee belting out over the loudspeakers at the stadium. It could be some craic.
Maybe there is even an opportunity for a Sport for Business event the day before, as part of a wider engagement…
