Paul McGinley OlympicsPaul McGinley was the headline name in a team of 17 ‘Team Leaders’ for the Rio Olympic games named yesterday by the Olympic Council of Ireland.

McGinley will use the lessons learned from Captaining Europe to victory in September’s Ryder Cup to lead the Men’s and Women’s teams in Golf which is making a first appearance at the games on a purpose built course.

“It was a great honour for me over the last two years to represent Europe as Captain and I am now delighted to have the opportunity to assist my Country as Team Leader of the Men’s and Ladies Irish Golf Team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the Olympic Council of Ireland in the build up to Rio over the next 18 months and representing our country at this phenomenal event.”

Others among the team of team leaders include Mike Heskin in Hockey, James O’Callaghan in Sailing, Chris Kitchen in Triathlon and Gillian McDarby in Rugby.

The role of the leaders will be to assist in logistics, planning and the smooth running of preparations in advance and at the games for all those who qualify as part of team Ireland.

“This is the most competent and successful group of Team Leaders that Team Ireland has ever fielded at an Olympic Games,” said Olympic Council of Ireland President Pat Hickey.

“I know our athletes and coaches will be given the greatest assistance possible in achieving their best performances.”
