Meath GAA has launched a major fundraising drive for clubs and members across the county. It involves a day at Fairyhouse racecourse, home of the Irish Grand National and will see up to 1,200 Meath supporters gathering at the track for lunch and an afternoon of sport without balls or sliothars on Sunday December 1st.
The event is being supported by Fairyhouse Steel and UniFlu and both football and hurling senior team managers were present for the official launch in Navan on Wednesday night.
Martin Donnelly who supports the Meath Hurlers announced his continued support for another two years and that he would look to bring fellow Clare Man to the county early in the new year to help out with training preparation.
The day at the races is hoped to raise over €50,000 from ticket sales and a raffle and auction on the day.
It is a familiar exercise for many of the larger clubs and counties with Kilmacud Crokes and Ballymun Kickhams, both recent winners of Dublin and Leinster Club titles booked in for similar days at Leopardstown over Christmas, and Longford GAA and others a standing order at the Punchestown Festival in April.
Clubs also are big users of greyhound racing facilities with regular ‘nights at the dogs’ serving as a solid cross sport fundraiser around the country.
