Ciaran Medlar has been appointed as the new independent Chairman of Shamrock Rovers. He will continue in his position as a Partner and Head of Taxation Services at BDO Ireland.

Medlar will take over the role in November and is the latest move in the transformation of the club sparked by the investment of Dermot Desmond in late 2019.

Rovers lead the SSE Airtricity Premier League by eight points with four games remaining and are scheduled to finish the season away to Shelbourne on October 30th.

Medlar will be familiar with the club as a season ticket holder in Tallaght and he is a friend of many within the game including Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny.

Interests

He represents the financial interests of a number of players and personalities in sport and leads the dedicated sports advisory unit within BDO.

He has been a long time friend and supporter of Sport for Business and we wish him the very best in this new role.

If they go on to secure the title they will go into the qualifying stages for the Champions League next summer and will be looking on as Dundalk play their group stage matches in the Europa League over the coming weeks.

That is the potential which Dermot Desmond has seen and hopes to unlock through his investment. Medlar is a good choice to make that potential a reality over the coming years.

He takes over the role of Chairman from Jonathan Roche who has been involved with the club over 15 years and who will remain so as Chair of the Members Club.

CEO Brendan Murray will also be leaving the club after five years at the end of the season. A process to find his replacement will commence soon.
