Mayweather Pacquaio

It’s the biggest boxing event for 20 years and will be seen by millions around the world into the small hours of Sunday morning here in Ireland.

In keeping with a seconds out theme here are 12 sports marketing nuggets around the clash between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio.

Round One ** Ringside seats are currently being offered on secondary ticketing websites for $150,000.  They say the undercard is very good but that’s still a lot of money to spend on what could last less than three minutes.

Round Two ** Pacquaio is the clear winner when it comes to endorsements.  His line of apparel with Nike, and campaigns with Nestlé and Foot Locker among others will earn him well over $5 Million this year

Round Three ** Mayweather earns nothing from endorsements, perhaps because of multiple allegations of domestic abuse and serving a three month jail sentence in 2012.

Round Four ** Who needs endorsements? May weather was the top earning sports star globally in 2014 bringing in an incredible $105 Million through Pay Per View and fight purses.

Round Five ** The first Pay Per View fight took place in 1991 between George Foreman and Evander Holyfield.  1.4 million people paid $35.95 to see the fight in their homes across the United States.

Round Six ** The standard Pay Per View charge in America this weekend is $99.95 and 3 million people are expected to buy.

Round Seven ** If that sounds like too much there are rebates available of up to $50 if you buy in beer for your fight night party from fight sponsors Tecate.  There is no such deal available here in Ireland for those who will pay Sky Sports Ireland €24.95.

Round Eight ** We do like Paddy Power’s use of Vine to promote round by round betting on the fight.  If you’ve not yet seen it check it out on their Twitter account @PaddyPower

Round Nine ** Make yourself feel good by measuring your fist size, from the first knuckle on your little finger and around your thumb.  Pacquaio’s measures 10 inches, Mayweather’s only 8.  The important thing though is what they can do with them.

Round Ten ** The Fight Night programme starts on TV at Midnight local time in Ireland though the contest itself is unlikely to start before around about 4am.  If you’re setting your alarm to get up though please don’t take our word for it.  This is one you won’t want to miss.

Round Eleven ** If you are watching on Saturday night the chances are you are at least ten years older than the average age will be in a few months time when Conor McGregor steps into his big fight Octagon in the same city of Las Vegas.

Round Twelve ** After 36 minutes one will walk away with his reputation assured as at least one of the greatest of all time.  May weather will also have $150 Million in his back pocket, Pacquaio $100 Million.  It takes Christiano Ronaldo a whole year to earn that kind of money…
