The latest episode in the Electric Ireland ‘GAA Minor Moments’ podcast has dropped, featuring former Mayo Football star Conor Mortimer.
Hailing from a passionate GAA household, Mortimer speaks on his love for football and his emergence at a young age as an exceptional talent in the underage Mayo set-up.
His impressive youth career included two years at minor level and four years at u-21 level with his county. He highlights his standout minor moment as pulling on the Mayo jersey for the first time and seeing his name in the Mayo News.
Speaking on a small setback in his early minor days, he discusses the importance of a positive setup and environment being key to the development of young players.
Touching on injury, Mortimer shares his experience of an ACL tear, where he took the unconventional route and made the choice to forgo surgery. He also praises Mayo for having the ‘best of the best’ psychological support at all playing levels, while still maintaining that the best 15 players on the field on any given day will ultimately win games.
He recalls the memories forged from winning the Sigerson Cup with DCU, right up to his iconic “Michael Jackson” celebration moment with Mayo.
Looking ahead, he believes that Mayo winning the Football All-Ireland Senior Championship would explode the belief of young players across the county.
Offering his advice to the next generation of minors, the All-Star emphasised that “you need to dedicate as much of your life as you can to make it at the top level”.
He stressed that there will be setbacks, which is a part of sports, and not to let those impact your belief or the achievement of your goals.
Electric Ireland’s ‘GAA Minor Moments’ Podcast will air on Tuesdays throughout the Electric Ireland Camogie & GAA Minor Championships as well-known Irish stars share memories from their early sporting careers, reflecting on the defining moments from playing Minor and how it shaped them, both on and off the pitch.
