Racehorse trainer Joseph O’Brien enjoyed an €8 Million payday for his team with a second victory in the iconic Melbourne Cup in the early hours of this morning.

There were no crowds at Flemington but the race took place with O’Brien’s Twilight Payment holding off his father Aidan’s Tiger Moth. Jamie Kah, the only woman jockey riding in this year’s race came third.

Both O’Brien’s watched the race from Ireland, as has been the case with most of their big wins on the international stage this season.

“It’s very special to be able to compete in these big races and this year in particular, there was a time when we weren’t sure if we would be able to have runners in Australia with all the restrictions on movement.”

“It’s incredibly special to be able to win the race for a second time.”

There was a tragedy as well though with the death of last year’s Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, trained by Aidan O’Brien.

This has given rise to a major controversy being the seventh horse to die in the race since 2013.
