Galway man Pierce O’Callaghan has been appointed to a senior position as Head of Competition Management at World Athletics.
In recent years he has worked as a consultant to the governing body where he played a key role in establishing the Continental Tour, expanding the World Athletics Indoor Tour and leading the Global Calendar Unit
He has been an international referee at four World Athletics Championships and four Olympic Games and was Director of Operations for the 2017 World Championships in London and Director of Readiness for the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
As an athlete, O’Callaghan only missed on representing Ireland at the Sydney Olympic Games through injury.
After working at AIB in Dublin for a short while he decided his life lay in the world of sports administration where he has become one of Ireland’s most respected and highly placed individuals.
He was involved in the creation of the first European Games in Azerbaijan where he spent two years as Director of Sport.
Closer to home his Savvy Sports Management created the PwC Staff Relay in Dublin which was heading towards becoming one of our largest participation events before Covid.
We wish him well in this new role.
