The attendance at games in the All Ireland Football and Hurling Championships might have been a shade on the low side, competing with the European Cup Final in Rugby and the FA Cup Final in Football but when the game is right, the GAA community retains a desire to be there.
The O’Neills.com U20 All Ireland Hurling Final will take place at UPMC Nowlan Park in Kilkenny this weekend with Offaly taking on Tipperary in a game that has captured the imagination.
After beating Dublin last Wednesday in a game where the faithful followers dominated the grandstands in Portlaoise, tickets went on sale yesterday and were gone in a matter of hours.
Nowlan Park holds 27,000 so the capacity for Saturday evening’s game will be greater than the combined crowds at Galway’s Pearse Stadium for Galway’s Win or bust Leinster Hurling match on Sunday and Dublin’s opening Round Robin game in the Senior Football Championship against Roscommon on Saturday.
“We hope that additional tickets may become available in the coming days,” said Offaly GAA in a statement last night.
“We will keep supporters updated on any new developments. We sincerely thank all the Faithful for their huge support.”
Offaly has won four All Ireland Senior Hurling titles, in 1981, 1985, 1994 and 1998, as well as three Football titles in 1971, 1972 and 1982.
They won the Football U20 All-Ireland title in 2021 and this would be a rare double to land both titles across both codes in such a short period of time.
In times where the realistic ambition of being a powerful force in both codes is ever rarer, it is great to see one of the smaller counties by population bucking the trend.
