The International Olympic Committee have revealed the design of the medals that irish athletes will be competing for in Rio starting on August 5th.
There will be 2,488 medals in total, 812 Gold and Silver and 864 bronze. Each has been produced with sustainibility to the fore. They weigh 500g and even the boxes they will be stored in are made from freijo wood.
The name of the event will be laser engraved around the edge of the medals.
In an irony that could only come in such commercially sensitive times each medal, as it always has, bears the image of the greek goddess of victory with the Panathinaikos Stadium and the acropolis in the background.
The name of the Goddess… Nike
The Paralympic medals have a try device inside which make a noise when the medal is shaken. Gold is the loudest noise, as one might expect.
Sometimes it’s the little details that make all the difference.
