The 2021 Open Championship is planning to welcome fans to Royal St George’s in kent this coming July.
The R&A who organise the only Golf Major Championship to take place outside the United States issued a statement yesterday sounding a note of cautious optimism over welcoming fans to the event.
“We are focused on staging The 149th Open at Royal St George’s from 11-18 July 2021 and on delivering a fantastic Championship for the country and the world of golf,” said CEO Martin Slumbers.
“We are acutely aware that this remains a difficult time for so many people and the continuing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is causing substantial disruption to all our lives but there is growing cause for optimism with the rapid roll-out of the vaccination programme (in the UK).”
“There are undoubtedly many more pressing concerns facing people at the moment but we are trying to look forward with cautious optimism.”
“With that in mind, we have been working closely with the government, our medical advisers and partner agencies as part of a rigorous scenario-planning exercise for staging The Open this year. We continue to plan for a full-scale Championship but also have robust plans in place for a reduced capacity or behind closed doors model.”
There will be bumps in the road on the way to July but having seen at close quarters the immense planning and construction of temporary facilities that goes into the staging of the tournament, optimistic words like these would not be said lightly.
The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will be staged at Mount Juliet just two weeks prior to this and who knows, fingers crossed things will be a lot better by then in terms of sport and outdoor gatherings.
