A Brazilian judge has lifted the injunction preventing public money being used to fill a major shortfall that was threatening the Paralympic Games in Rio next month.
This should free almost €75 million that had been under threat due to cost overruns at the Olympic Games still underway in the city.
Payments to cover travel expenses of participating nations and athletes, including those from Ireland have been delayed by three weeks placing a doubt over some countries ability to take part.
Ticket sales have also been poor with reports that as little as 12% of capacity has been taken up.
London 2012 was a fabulous occasion where Ireland’s team shone as never before.
It would be a crying shame if Rio represented a step backwards for the ‘superhuman’ athletes that we will be sending over including Jason Smyth, Michael McKillop, Ellen Keane and our CP Football team.
At least now though the very real threat of a postponement or abandonment appears to have been set aside.
