Eight days after becoming World Champion for the fourth time Katie Taylor was back on the front page at the weekend, this time as a political row broke out over facilities at her home Bray Boxing Gym.
The club was recently awarded a maximum facilities grant of €25,000 but that is mainly covering a new floor, dry lining of walls and the installation of a single toilet and shower.  The Sunday Independent reported that Taoiseach Enda Kenny was ’embarrassed’ on a vist to the club last week.
The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport were quick to release a statement saying it had awarded €1.25 million to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association for upgrading of facilities at boxing clubs around the country and that Bray’s grant had come from this.
Boxers, including a large number of local children have to use the facilities at a local bar at present.
The question of how finite resources can be spread among equally deserving causes was highlighted in a poll commissioned by the newspaper which showed that 18% of repondents felt boxing should be given special treatment because of our high level of performance in recent years, but that 75% felt money should be allocated equally across all sports.
