EirGrid, the state-owned company that manages Ireland’s electricity grid, has launched a new initiative the EirGrid Power Play Awards, as part of its Official Timings Partnership with the GAA.

A power play is a standout moment from a player or manager that allowed a team to power forward by positively defining or altering the outcome of a game.

Each month a number of power plays will be selected by a panel of experts, from both the Football and Hurling All Ireland Championships, and will be put to public vote to be named the EirGrid Power Play of the Month.

The EirGrid Power Play moments from May, June and July, as voted by GAA fans, will then be put to a final public vote for the EirGrid Power Play of the Year.

Each winner will be awarded a premium sports watch as a prize for their efforts and for the recognition of the public.

This is the seventh year for EirGrid as the Official Timing Partner of the GAA as part of an agreement that runs to 2025. EirGrid is also the sponsor of the EirGrid GAA Football All-Ireland U20 Championship.

This morning former stars Cian O’Sullivan of Dublin and Anthony Nash are across the media as ambassadors for the brand speaking about this weekend’s key Championship matches for Dublin and Cork. The timing of having them out there, and the striking photography by Brendan Moran of Sportsfile have ensured a big splash for the announcement and the brand.

“Demonstrable leadership and real-time decision-making can change the course of a game in a second,” said EirGrid Chief Executive Mark Foley.

“Every summer matches hinge upon power plays that make the difference. We believe that this new initiative of formally recognising these game-changing moments will capture the imagination of GAA fans around the country.”

“Our relationship with the GAA is an important way for us to connect with communities across Ireland, as we do on a daily basis when planning and managing Ireland’s electricity grid to deliver a cleaner energy future.”

“EirGrid works closely in communities throughout the country, ensuring a clean and reliable energy supply,” added GAA President Larry McCarthy.

“We are grateful to EirGrid for its longstanding support of Gaelic Games through the Timing partnership, as well as sponsoring the EirGrid GAA U20 Football Championships.”
Sport for Business Perspective

This is a clever way to mark moments in the game that are often the most talked about but rarely recognised. We can imagine clips of the plays, neatly packaged, being widely shared across social and achieving excellent recognition for the brand and the players.
