Premier Sports has confirmed an extensive broadcast line-up for the 2026 EPCR Finals Weekend in Bilbao, with Ulster and Leinster both competing for European silverware across a high-profile weekend of rugby action.

The broadcaster will air live coverage of Friday night’s EPCR Challenge Cup Final between Ulster and Montpellier, followed by Saturday’s Investec Champions Cup Final where Leinster face reigning champions Union Bordeaux-Bègles at San Mamés Stadium.

Coverage will be fronted by a heavyweight punditry and commentary team featuring former internationals Simon Zebo, John Barclay, Lawrence Dallaglio, Martin Bayfield, Stephen Ferris, Andy Goode, Ian Madigan and Ryan Wilson.

Richard Sweeney, CEO of Premier Sports, described the weekend as “one of the biggest occasions in the rugby calendar,” adding that the broadcaster had assembled a team designed to “bring viewers up close to all the drama and excitement from Bilbao.”

Leinster return to the Champions Cup Final seeking a fifth European title after losing three finals in four seasons between 2022 and 2024. The province also has positive memories of San Mamés Stadium, having won the 2018 final there against Racing 92.

However, despite the significance of the occasion for Irish rugby, neither final will be available on free-to-air television in Ireland or the UK, with Premier Sports retaining exclusive live rights to both matches. That absence from mainstream terrestrial broadcasting is likely to reignite debate around the visibility and accessibility of elite club rugby.

In previous eras, major European rugby finals involving Irish provinces often benefitted from wider public exposure through free-to-air partnerships, helping to drive casual engagement beyond the core rugby audience. With rugby continuing to compete for audience attention in an increasingly fragmented sports media market, limiting marquee fixtures to subscription platforms risks reducing the reach of some of the sport’s biggest moments.

Then again, the gamble is that assembling such a strong rugby portfolio and generating greater revenue for the sport through Paid TV will ultimately pay a greater dividend, both in financial and also engagement levels.

For Premier Sports, the finals weekend forms part of an increasingly strong rugby offering that also includes the BKT United Rugby Championship play-offs and the Top 14 play-offs later this month and into June.

The broadcaster’s investment underlines the continuing value of rugby rights within the subscription television market, even if the longer-term challenge for the sport may be balancing commercial value with audience growth and accessibility.
