It’s not just about the football and the fans. The power of sport to emphasise Ireland’s place in the world of business and politics is also an important element of the World Cup campaign.

The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin TD, has launched a promotional campaign to celebrate and deepen Ireland’s ties with Australia and New Zealand.

“I am delighted to announce the launch of a promotional campaign to celebrate and strengthen our links with both Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

“Events such as this World Cup offer a wonderful opportunity to recall our strong relationship with these countries, including our many shared values.”

“This campaign will include digital content showcasing the many economic, cultural and political links we share. It will acknowledge the fantastic role our vibrant and dynamic diaspora communities play in representing Ireland in each country, and will shine a light on the positive ways that sport acts as a bridge between us.”

“It is wonderful that more than four thousand fans will travel to Australia to cheer on our team, alongside the many thousands of Irish people who call Australia home. As always, our Embassy in Canberra and Consulate General in Sydney are on hand to support our Irish communities in Australia, and my Department are providing consular information to fans travelling for the World Cup.
