David Conway (above left) Director of the National Sport Campus, has been inducted as an Associate of the International Union of Architects – Sports & Leisure Working Group.
This is another major recognition for the Campus which last week won the Best Sports Facility at the Irish Sport Industry Awards.
The UIA Sports & Leisure Working Programme Group already has a strong Irish influence being led by Gar Holohan. It promotes the universal development of high quality, sustainable sports and leisure facilities from basic community sports halls to comprehensive complexes capable of hosting major international events such as the Olympic Games.
This group comprises of specialist sports architects, drawn from every continent, whose mission is to inform developing countries of the socio-economic benefits of active sport for all ages and abilities.
It advocates the need for local and national policies and the importance of forward- planning programmes, sound brief-making and the appointment of experienced design teams for the achievement of attractive, functional and sustainable buildings.
Conway’s nomination arose from recognition of how he engaged with the variety of National Governing Bodies of Sport in Ireland to develop a world class National Sporting Campus in Dublin.
He has been involved with the creation of the National Sports Campus since 2001, having previously managed sporting facilities at the University of Limerick and DCU.
The facilities at the Campus have surged forward in recent years with major pitch developments now completed for the GAA and FAI, the National Indoor Arena rising from the ground, the National Aquatic Centre hosting major international events as well as providing community access and a host of facilities enabling high performance preparation across sports ranging from equestrian disciplines to boxing, hockey to diving, and most points in between.
