Sport is deeply invested in its own history, even if in the greater scheme of things it has only been around in organised fashion for the blink of an eye.
Yesterday at Glasnevin Cemetary, GAA President Larry McCarthy laid a wreath on the grave of Michael Cusack marking the 175th anniversary of the birth of the Clare school teacher who played a pivotal role in the formation of the GAA in 1884.
His memory lives on through the naming of the Cusack Stand at Croke Park and the Cusack Park grounds in Ennis and Mullingar.
He was the first secretary of the GAA when it was founded on the 1st November 1884, with Maurice Davin as the first President.
Their legacy has endured and it is good to remember them for what they created.
