There is no shortage of drama and wonder in the Gaelic Games summer but in terms of creating memories that will last a lifetime, it is hard to beat the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Finals that are taking place this week.

Impacted by Covid and the broader disruption to school sport over the last two years it was even more special to hear the shrieks of delight and the clash of hurls in Croke Park yesterday as the Dublin finals culminated at HQ.

The Corn Uí Mhaoilan final featuring Maia Nic an Úcaire of Gaelscoile Inse Chor, Dublin and Lucy McCarthy of Loreto GNA Dalkey was one of the finals to be played yesterday with buses arriving packed with players and friends throughout the day.

Over 2,800 schools and 200,000 students will have taken part in the primary schools’ competition this year with finals taking place across the country.

Allianz and Cumann na mBunscol are also gifting 500 footballs, 200 hurleys and 200 sliotars to schools across the country to welcome Ukrainian students into our national games and local communities.

To have the chance to play with your friends, in front of your proud families is something very special and doing so at Croke Park is a memory that lasts long after the final whistle is blown.

Its return is like the first swallow of summer, a sign that we are fully back to where we once were.
