The RTÉ Sport Awards 2020 will be held on Thursday 28 January on RTÉ One. The event is normally staged in the weeks leading up to Christmas but with all sporting activity pushed to later in the year and All Ireland Finals only taking place in December this was always going to be an exceptional year.
Joanne Cantwell and Darragh Maloney will present a different kind of show now but it will at least be there to honour those whose achievements did still give cause to celebrate over the past 12 months.
Nominees for the Awards will be revealed over the coming weeks with no shortage of highlights to choose from including Katie Taylor’s two incredible defences of her unified lightweight belts, Sam Bennett’s historic green jersey win at the Tour de France, Limerick’s unbeaten year, Kilkenny’s Camogie championship win and success for Dublin in both the men’s and women’s All Ireland Football Championships.
Other notable achievements include Sanita Puspure retaining her European gold in the single sculls, Ciara Mageean’s purple patch post lockdown on the athletics tracks of Europe, Oisin O’Callaghan claiming a first-ever downhill gold for Ireland at the Junior World Mountain Bike Championships, Katelynn Phelan winning the WBC youth title, as well as the WBF and WIBA belts in the welterweight division and Shamrock Rovers going unbeaten on the way to winning an 18th League of Ireland Premier Division title.
“The initial lockdown and then subsequent cancellation of domestic and global events including the Olympics and Euros cast a huge shadow over the sporting landscape but the return of sport under correct protocols showed just how important it remains for the fabric of our society as well as the resilience of our top athletes,” said RTÉ Head of Sport, Declan McBennett.
“Bringing sport to the audience is one of our core functions and it is critical we honour those who continuously strive for the highest standards and inspire others.”
The RTÉ Sport Awards 2020 will be broadcast on RTÉ One on Thursday, 28th January at 10-15 PM and we will bring you all of the shortlists as they are announced.
There will be four Awards for RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year, RTÉ Sport Team of the Year, RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year and RTÉ Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year
