RTÉ has confirmed that it will broadcast the 2020 FAI Women’s Senior Cup Final live from Tallaght Stadium on Saturday, December 12th. The Final was shown live when forming part of a doubleheader with the men’s Final at the Aviva Stadium but this is the first time in the competition’s history as a standalone event that it will be shown live on national television with a full broadcast provided by RTE.
The game will form part of a special day for Women’s sport with the Liberty Insurance All Ireland Camogie Final also being shown live that same day. In 2019 this was the most-watched event in Women’s sport in Ireland with an average of 254,800 viewers tuning into the live coverage and a peak of 323,400 viewers representing a 32.4% share of the television audience.
The semi-finals for the competition will be played in the first week of November between Wexford Youths and Peamount United, and Cork City and Treaty United. Wexford Youths are bidding to win the competition for the third time in a row. The team is sponsored by Sport for Business member Energia.
Delayed League
On the Men’s side, the SSE Airtricity League 2020 season fixture list has been revised due to the recent COVID-19 outbreaks at league clubs.
The Premier Division season will now conclude on Sunday, November 8th whilst the First Division season will now conclude on Tuesday, October 27th.
The final rounds of both divisions have been pushed back for competition integrity purposes, with all fixtures scheduled for the same time and date.
The two St. Patrick’s Athletic fixtures which were affected by the squad’s 14-day isolation have been rescheduled. Finn Harps v St. Patrick’s Athletic will now be played on Wednesday, October 28th and St. Patrick’s Athletic v Dundalk will now take place on Sunday, November 1st.
The two Galway United fixtures which were affected by the squad’s 14-day isolation have also been rescheduled. Galway United v Drogheda United will now take place Tuesday, October 20th and Bray Wanderers v Galway United will be played on Saturday, October 24th.
It has to be hoped that there will be no more delays due to Covid-19 but at least there is an obvious flexibility so that the right thing is done in the most challenging of circumstances
