Shelbourne’s 2–1 aggregate victory over Linfield, secured through a composed first-leg win at Tolka Park and a hard-fought draw in Belfast last night, sends them into the second qualifying round against Qarabağ. It’s the first time since 2006 that the Drumcondra side has reached this stage in European competition.

The result came just weeks after the resignation of Damien Duff as first-team manager. The club regrouped swiftly under Joey O’Brien, who stepped in as interim and has since been appointed permanent head coach, and new CEO Tomás Quinn.

Progress in UEFA competition is more than just a sporting achievement. The qualification win guarantees Shelbourne a significant financial windfall, with at least €1.7 million in UEFA prize money and additional commercial benefits on the horizon.

That money represents a major boost to the club’s future planning. It enables investment in facilities, squad depth, and off-field infrastructure, while also strengthening Shelbourne’s position in attracting talent and partnerships.

League of Ireland: A Rising Tide
From a wider perspective, Shelbourne’s success is another step forward for the League of Ireland’s European presence.

Every result improves Ireland’s UEFA coefficient, building toward better seeding, more qualification places, and greater respect for the league across Europe.

Shelbourne now face Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ — a seasoned European outfit with recent experience in the group stage. It will be their toughest test yet, but everything is possible.

It has also been great to see the club capturing and telling their story as they go with these three pieces of video content, an example of how to capture the moments that matter the most.
