The Second Captains Live show on RTE2 television this Autumn will be sponsored for the first time by Mars Ireland through its Snickers and Hazelnut brand.
There will be six shows running from September through to November combining a mix of personality interview and humour echoing the popular podcast and taking elements from the ‘Top Gear’ style of leaderboards and audience participation.
The podcast itself is sponsored by Rabobank. It has retained top spot in an ever growing market since the team took the brand away from Newstalk towards the Irish Times in 2014.
That crossover between media has led to Ken Earley in particular developing a regular column in the newspaper and the success of the programme can best be judged from this review earlier in the year by rival newspaper the Independent.
“Second Captains Live is a fine, laidback and supremely confident example of the consistently excellent sports programming that RTE produces” wrote Ian Doherty.
“The simple genius of Second Captains rests with its hosts, Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early and Ciaran Murphy. The three of them are obviously experts in their field – expert enough to ensure they never veer into that tedious territory usually inhabited by nerds who use sporting statistics as a form of exclusionary verbal jousting.”
“The three of them are all seasoned broadcasters at this stage. Yet they still exude a simple, refreshing sense of honest joy.”
There will be new bespoke stings for the sponsorship which will be produced in house by RTE and shown on TV as well as the Video on Demand version on the RTE Player.
This will be backed up by runs of the ‘You’re not you when you’re hungry’ ads that have featured Joan Collins, Rowan Atkinson and Mr T in recent versions.
The brands twitter account will also be a part of the online conversation as it was yesterday when the Second Captains twitter account introduced it as their new Chocolate overlords…
