Sport Summit 2014The Web Summit gets underway in Dublin this morning and sport will play a bigger part than ever before.

Traditionally a gathering for technology companies and investors, the power of sport in terms of investment, engagement and the critical importance of marginal gains has seen the event organisers reach out to a wider sporting audience with an impressive line up of speakers.

Manchester United Group Managing Director Richard Arnold will be in town to discuss how the club uses technology to reach its global fan base.  He may also take home some ideas that will enable them compete with Manchester City in the space.

At the weekend City launched a new approach to mobile broadcasting at games, and with deference to rights packages, in a different format for fans away from the Etihad Stadium.

The content was good for City fans with a 1-0 win over Man United and you can read a behind the scenes look at how the experiment went, as well as what lessons it might deliver for major sporting events on the Next Web here.

It is most likely that this will only be the starting point for how social coverage of the Euro 2020 games at the Aviva Stadium will be accommodated, never mind a potential irish hosted 2023 Rugby World Cup, all within the next ten years.

There will be streams on the impact of technology in the fields of injury prevention ahead of the announcement of a major new research foundation at the Sports Surgery Clinic tomorrow, as well as on agency, media, genetics, statistics and fantasy sports.

Sport for Business will be there throughout the next couple of days to bring you news and views on the world of technology and sport.

Join us throughout the Summit on social media and here online to keep up to date with what is happening.
