Every Friday our Sporting Charity column will highlight charity initiatives being undertaken against the background of sport and where relevant, engaging with the business community. If you have a Charity event that you would like us to feature please let us know and we will do our best to shine whatever light we can on what you are doing…
Cross Rugby Legends Cycle
Over 200 cyclists, including Irish and International former rugby players Paul, Richard and David Wallace are cycling up the west coast of Ireland next month to raise awareness of cancer education among youth communities.
The 2014 CROSS Rugby Legends Mizen to Malin Cycle is supported by Viviscal and will take place between Saturday 6th and Friday 12th September. There are a limited number of places still available on stages of the trip though two stages are now sold out. If you want to join the ‘southern swing’ between Mizen Head and Galway via Kenmare and Limerick you can contact the organisers through www.rugbylegendscycle.com
Anyone wishing to make a donation, or sponsor an individual cyclist, can do so at the Charitable Friends of CROSS page at www.mycharity.ie.
Knights Without Borders
As part of the build up to the Croke Park Classic at the end of the month 17 student athletes and staff from the University of Central Florida are hard at world this week on renovating the Lourdes Community Hall on Sean McDermott Street in Dublin.
The project was initiated by Croke Park Stadium and Habitat for Humanity Ireland to lead up to the arrival of the team in a little over three weeks and is being managed in conjunction with the college athletic programme’s ‘Knights without Borders’ charity initiative.
One imagines that a couple of linebackers would make light enough work of what will be needed to transform the community centre and leave a lasting physical as well as social legacy of their journey to Ireland.
Adventures with MS

Over 2,000 competitors are expected to participate in the event covering running, cycling and canoeing through the Kerry landscape surrounding the town. Among them will be Liam Delahunty, a dad of four from Waterford diagnosed with MS in 2007 and determined to compete in 24 adventure races around Ireland over the next 18 months to show that MS can still mean an active lifestyle.
You can register to take part in the race as part of an MS Ireland team here.
