Switzerland has been awarded the hosting of the Euro 2025 Women’s Football Championship Finals.
There were four bids with a combined one from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland and another from Poland, as well as the Swiss each gathering four votes in the first round of voting from UEFA’s Executive Committee in Lisbon yesterday. France were eliminated at the first round.
The one vote for France and one of the votes for Poland switched to Switzerland in the second round, putting them ahead in the final round of voting. At that point, with the elimination of Poland, all three of their votes went to the Swiss Bid which was declared the winner.
A key factor in the win was the compact nature of the bid, seen as increasingly important given concerns about mass travel and its impact on the environment.
There will be seven host cities including Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern with the tournament scheduled to take place in the summer of 2025.
The draw for the Nations League that will form the first stage of the qualification process for Switzerland 2025 will take place later this year.
At present, the Republic of Ireland is ranked 22nd with the top 16 going into League A to playa against each other and secure a better-seeded path to the Euro Finals. Northern Ireland are ranked 45th and will play in League C.
