The draw has been made for the first round of the first-ever Tailteann Cup in Gaelic Football.

The tournament will be formally launched in Croke Park later today and we will bring you news of what ti expect in our Sport for Business PM Bulletin.

The tournament is divided geographically for the first round with London playing in the Northern section and New York in the Southern section.

In the latter, there is a preliminary round with Wexford at home to Offaly and Wicklow at home to Waterford this coming weekend. The winners of those ties will then face each other in the opening round.

Carlow will be at home to Tipperary and Laois at home to Westmeath in the other first-round ties with New York getting a Bye to what will be the tournament Quarter Finals.

In the Northern section Longford have been drawn at home to Fermanagh; Leitrim at home to Antrim; Sligo at home to London and Cavan at home to Down.

“I hope that this competition takes off like a meteorite,” said GAA President Larry McCarthy.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for four counties to get to play in a Championship Semi-Final and maybe a Final in Croke Park at the height of summer.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity for spectators, fans and teams. Some county will grab this opportunity and march through the summer to a wonderful Final occasion at Croke Park.”

Sport for Business Perspective

Peer level competition is a staple of sport at the grassroots and the tailteann cup provides an opportunity to match the excitement and competition of the Allianz Leagues deep into the summer. That can only be a good thing and we look forward to seeing the level of support that the competition generates.
