With the Paralympic Games underway there will be many who do not understand the classification system that enables athletes with different forms or degrees of disability to compete fairly alongside each other.

Paralympics Ireland has produced this excellent guide.

It is worth knowing so that we can explain to others and enhance the understanding of the Games and the effort that goes into taking part.

As an example, Jason Smyth is classified as a T13 athlete. This is the highest level of visual acuity in the three visual impairment classes. It is for athletes with a visual field of between 10 and 40 degrees. T12 is for those with less than ten degrees and T11 is for those with very low visual acuity and/or no light perception.

T11 athletes are those you might see running with a guide.
