As part of the BKT United Rugby Championship’s wider ambition to raise awareness and try remove the stigma around mental health within the rugby community the tournament has collaborated with mental health-focused charity, LooseHeadz.
As part of the partnership, this weekend (Round 10) has been designated as the launch of #MentalFitnessMonth.
The BKT URC will help amplify the work carried out by LooseHeadz who look to create safe environments, provide resources and encourage conversations to be had around mental health. Rugby has a unique position with the ability to influence communities and reduce the stigma, bridging the gap and encouraging conversations to be had.
“We’re super proud to partner up with the URC for Mental Fitness Month to shine a light on the importance of mental health,” said LooseHeadz Founder Rob Shotton.
“January can be tough for a lot of people, so it’s vital that we remind everyone that it’s ok to ask for help and that no one should struggle in silence. Rugby is a special sport, and it has a unique way of bringing people together, and it’s amazing to see the URC using their platform to support the LooseHeadz mission to save lives by placing a mental health lead at every rugby club in the world.”
“This partnership also means we can reach even more people across Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and South Africa. Together, we’re creating a stronger, more connected rugby community.”
Across Round 10, BKT URC Clubs are creating their own mental health orientated campaigns and match-day activations, alongside content specially created by BKT URC around mental health shared throughout the week. Sport for Business will take a look at some of these ideas on Friday.
“Kindness and being there for someone can be life-changing, whether this is in a sports environment or in any aspect of life,” said Benetton player and LooseHeadz Ambassador Sebastian Negri.
“It’s great to see the URC getting behind the charity as this will create more awareness and highlight the powerful messages we, as a charity, are trying to share.”
“Seeing how far LooseHeadz has come in supporting those in need is truly inspiring,” added Munster player and LooseHeadz Ambassador Mike Haley. “And to see the URC partnering with them to amplify the reach and connect with more people in the rugby community is great.”
The Sport for Business Membership comprises nearly 300 organisations, including all the leading sports and sponsors, as well as commercial and state agencies.
