Sports clubs across the country are being encouraged to use video in promoting themselves to new and existing audiences.

My Club Finances is running a competition for clubs with a chance to win €1,000 and most importantly get clubs thinking about how they portray themselves.

The focus of the competition is on celebrating how the club values the volunteers that make it possible to run the 12,500 sports clubs that exist up and down the country.

At last week’s launch of the latest Irish Sports Monitor it was revealed that 13.3% of the population are involved in volunteering in sport, with over 25% of those involved in more than one sport.

The average number of hours per week given over to sports volunteering in 4.47 making up to an economic value based on what it would cost to employ people to keep the show on the road of as much as €1.3 billion per annum.

Numbers involved in volunteering climbed quickly during the recession and while the 2013 figure showed a slight decline on 2011 this competition will force clubs to think carefully about the value of their volunteers and ensure that the numbers involved remain at the new higher benchmark.

“We see on a daily basic how much effort is put into the running of sports club by it’s volunteers,” said MyClubFinances CEO Warren Healy.

“These volunteers are the very heart of the sports club – without them, nothing happens.  However, we wonder if the members see this effort and truly value the fantastic contribution being made around them.”

“This is the chance for the club members to demonstrate that they do appreciate and notice the volunteer effort.”

The competition is run as part of the Wheel ‘Better together’ campaign.  Videos can be added to the Better Together 2014 Competition website here.
