Virgin Media Television has unveiled a heavyweight broadcast team for the opening weekend of the inaugural Nations Championship, with Peter O’Mahony, Rob Kearney and Stuart Lancaster among the names who will front its coverage.

The new competition begins this Saturday, July 4th, with Ireland taking on Australia in Sydney on a day that will feature 15 hours of live rugby across Virgin Media One and Virgin Media PLAY.

As the exclusive free-to-air home of the Nations Championship in Ireland, Virgin Media will show every match from the July window live, beginning this weekend with six fixtures across the day, including New Zealand against France, Australia against Ireland, and South Africa against England.

Big Names for a Big Launch

The Nations Championship brings together the leading nations from the northern and southern hemispheres in a new global format, with the July window followed by further rounds in November and a Finals Weekend to determine the first winners.

For Virgin Media, the launch represents one of the biggest additions to its rugby portfolio, and the broadcaster has responded with a panel designed to match the occasion’s scale.

Former Ireland captain Peter O’Mahony will be part of the punditry line-up, joined by former Ireland and Lions fullback Rob Kearney, current Connacht Head Coach Stuart Lancaster, former Ireland international Ian Madigan, Six Nations winner and coach Fiona Hayes, former Ulster and Ireland centre Darren Cave, and former Ireland winger Andrew Trimble.

Coverage across the day will be anchored by Joe Molloy, Tommy Martin and Will Dalton, while commentary will be led by Dave McIntyre, alongside Stuart McAvoy, Alan Quinlan and Ian McKinley.

A Full Day of Rugby

Virgin Media’s opening day coverage begins at 7.30 am and runs through to 10.30 pm, reflecting the scale of the first “Super Saturday” in the new tournament.

Ireland’s opening game against Australia will be one of the headline fixtures of the day, with Andy Farrell’s side beginning their campaign away from home before further July meetings with Japan and New Zealand.

Virgin Media will also bring Nations Championship voices into its wider schedule, with members of the punditry team set to appear across Ireland AM and The Six O’Clock Show during the tournament, broadening the storytelling around the competition beyond matchday coverage.

Free-to-Air Reach

Brian Gleeson, Head of Sport at Virgin Media Television, described the Nations Championship as “a landmark moment for international rugby” and said the broadcaster wanted a team that reflected the importance of the competition.

“We’ve assembled a panel featuring some of the most respected names in the game, ensuring viewers will enjoy first-class insights throughout every matchday,” he said.

“As the exclusive free-to-air home of the tournament in Ireland, we’re looking forward to bringing fans closer to the action than ever before, starting this Saturday with a full day of world-class rugby and analysis.”

The Nations Championship kicks off on Saturday, July 4th, with every fixture available live and free-to-air on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media PLAY.

Sheehan to Captain Ireland in Sydney Opener

Dan Sheehan will captain Ireland in Saturday’s opening Nations Championship clash against Australia at a sold-out Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

Head Coach Andy Farrell has named his Match Day Squad, sponsored by Vodafone, for the opening game of the inaugural tournament, with kick-off at 8.10pm local time and 11.10am Irish time.

Hugo Keenan starts at fullback, with Rob Baloucoune and Jamie Osborne named on the wings. Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey line out in midfield, while Sam Prendergast partners Jamison Gibson-Park in the half-backs.

In the pack, Tom O’Toole, Sheehan and Tadhg Furlong make up the front row, with Joe McCarthy and James Ryan in the second row.

Cian Prendergast, Josh van der Flier and Jack Conan complete the starting team in the back row.

Rónan Kelleher, Jeremy Loughman, Thomas Clarkson, Tadhg Beirne and Nick Timoney provide the forward cover from the bench, with Craig Casey, Ciaran Frawley and Bundee Aki named as the backline replacements.
