Ten days of World Class golf finished on Saturday at Carton House when Denmark claimed the World Amateur Team Championship with a one-shot victory over the United States.

The Danes had identical twins Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard to thank for their strong finish with Spain coming in third and Ireland finishing in a tie for tenth.

The Men’s tournament had followed on from the Women’s with both taking place over the O’Meara and Montgomerie Courses at Carton House.

The event also saw the hosting of the International Golf Federation Congress where France was selected as the host nation for the event in 2022. The next staging will take place in Hong Kong in 2020.

The World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition conducted by the International Golf Federation, which comprises 151 national governing bodies of golf in 146 countries, and 22 international professional tours and organizations conducting major championships.

Staging it in Ireland has been a major boost for Ireland’s reputation as a nation capable of staging major events, and has taken place only weeks after staging the Allianz European Para-Swimming Championships.

The Amateur game may often live in the shadows of the professionals but Shane Lowry was on hand earlier in the week to wish the Irish team well having competed in this tournament himself back in 2008.
