The 2024 Tailteann Cup senior football championship was formally launched at Croke Park this morning by GAA President Jarlath Burns.

He was joined by players from the competing counties who will do battle for the prize in the coming weeks.

The fixtures for rounds one and two of the competition have been confirmed.

Kildare will host Longford on Saturday at 18:00 in a game to be shown live on GAAGo. Leitrim at home to Waterford is the other game in Group 1. Sligo. Wexford, Antrim and Tipperary are in Group 2, Laois, Carlow, Fermanagh and Wicklow in Group 3, and Offaly, London, Down and Limerick in Group 4.

The final round of fixtures and locations will be confirmed after the second round of games takes place.

The Tailteann Cup final will be held at Croke Park on Saturday, July 13 as a curtain raiser to an All-Ireland senior semi-final and will be shown live on RTÉ.

Down would be favourites to succeed Westmeath and Meath in lifting the trophy with Kildare and Sligo also considered to have a fighting chance.

The semi-finals will be held at Croke Park on Saturday, June 23 and will also be both shown live on RTÉ. There will also be GAAGO coverage of seven matches across the other rounds, commencing with that round one clash of Kildare v Longford.

The eventual Tailteann Cup champions will be guaranteed Sam Maguire Cup championship football in 2025. A Tailteann Cup Team of the Year will be selected and honoured later this year as part of the annual GAA awards season. Both finalists will receive a holiday fund support grant from Croke Park.

“Now in its third year, the Tailteann Cup has already carved a niche for itself in our calendar. It offers a chance for counties to target a championship crown on an All-Ireland stage and produces competitive games,” said GAA President Jarlath Burns.

“Our inaugural champions, Westmeath, have been fantastic ambassadors with their performances, and I expect last year’s winners Meath, to also greatly benefit from the experience of qualifying for Sam Maguire football this year. We are looking forward to another exciting competition.”

The Tailteann Cup is considered to be part of the Football Championship for sponsorship purposes giving AIB, Allianz and SuperValu the right to promote under their names.
