Today is the first-ever World Daily Mile Day.
The initiative, developed in Scotland in 2012, was launched in Ireland by Athletics Ireland in 2018. It encourages children at primary school level to walk or run for 15 minutes a day.
So simple and yet so effective and the programme is now taking place in 1,200 schools across Ireland, reaching over 200,000 children, enabling structured but fun physical activity.
According to research published in 2020, teachers see The Daily Mile as an essential part of the school day, with 77 percent of primary school teachers stating that it has a positive impact on the attentiveness and concentration levels of children throughout the school day.
The day will be marked today across the country by the schools taking part, each of whom was able to register for a celebration ‘kit’ that will make today’s event even more special.
