RTÉ Sport were as nimble on their feet as David Oliver Joyce needed to be last night, scheduling his 2130 bout to be shown on the RTÉ News Now Channel as a result of a clash with the UEFA Super Cup between Real Madrid and Sevilla.
The soccer had to be shown on RTÉ2 as a result of a contractual commitment to UEFA and the Champions’ League. This prevented the broadcaster from going live to Rio on the normal channel for Olympic coverage but the fight could still be seen free to air on the news Channel as well as online through the RTÉ Player.
The national broadcaster has had to be quick thinking already this week, clearing the early evening schedule on RTÉ1 on Saturday to accommodate live coverage of the Kilkenny Waterford Hurling replay that will follow on from a double header of live Camogie action.
The power of sport as a magnet for TV audiences is clearly alive and well, and being well served by the RTÉ Sports Department.
