In recent years, as the list has expanded, we have deliberately left out currently active sports stars to shine a light on those who are less obvious but equally influential.
Katie Taylor’s retirement this year, though, allows us to bring her into the mix.
Her influence on Irish sport extends far beyond the extraordinary achievements that have made her one of the greatest boxers of her generation.
In September 2026, she brought her professional career to a remarkable conclusion at Croke Park, defeating Flora Pili in front of a capacity crowd and retiring as a three-time undisputed world champion.
The occasion represented the culmination of a journey that helped transform women’s boxing from a marginalised pursuit into a globally recognised professional sport.
Taylor has challenged assumptions about female athletes’ commercial appeal, demonstrating their capacity to headline major events, attract international broadcasting audiences and command substantial public support.
Her achievements have inspired generations of young athletes while strengthening Ireland’s international reputation for sporting excellence.
The Croke Park occasion showed how one woman’s determination can fundamentally change the opportunities available to those who follow. Now we will wait to see where she takes her influence next.

This is the 14th year we have listed 50 Women of Influence in Irish Sport. We will add new names daily through early December.
We have an open nomination process, and you can nominate potential additions until our closing date of November 10th, 2026.
Our definition of influence is broad and includes those making a difference in how sport is governed, managed, and brought to life. This year’s list will include CEO’s, leaders, founders, coaches, storytellers and more. To highlight those who may be less familiar, we deliberately exclude those who are still active players in their sport.
We’ll host our Annual Women in Sport Conference at Lidl HQ on Tuesday, December 1st, featuring a range of national and international speakers and a room full of inspiring guests.
