Some 12,000 people took to the streets of Limerick over the weekend as the Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run attracted record participants and crowds.
- An estimated 40,000 people lined the streets to support the runners
- Runners travelled to Limerick for the event from over 20 different nations, from the US to Holland, Denmark and Canada.
- An estimated 50,000 bottles of water were consumed along the route.
- 2,000 children took part ion their own ‘junior’ version of the event.
- 4.5 kilometres of barriers were erected around the city centre.
This wasn’t the only big run in Munster as the Wings for Life World Run took place in Kerry. Ireland was one of 34 countries taking part in this Red Bull sponsored initiative which raised almost $4 Million for Spinal Cord Research.
A total of 35,000 runners took part in the race with the ultimate winner being Lemawork Ketema of Ethiopia, running in Austria who completes 78.57 kilometres before being the last man caught up to by the catcher car that had been synced across all the global locations.
