The Republic of Ireland Senior Women’s Team played the United States last night in front of a sell out attendance of 18,0000 in the Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.

It was only a friendly match but the crowd came, the game was broadcast live on Fox Sports in the US and Setanta Sport here in Ireland and it was a perfect reply to those who suggest that Women’s sport will never cross the threshold of mass or popular appeal.

Ireland won’t be at the World Cup in Canada this summer but the tournament will be televised live on the BBC and will see another significant step up in awareness and appreciation for the Women’s game.

Sue Ronan’s side will start their campaign to qualify for the European Championship Finals here in Dublin with matches at Tallaght Stadium against Finland on September 21st and Spain on November 26th.  They deserve a passionate and enthusiastic crowd to cheer them on.  It is up to Irish sports fans like you and I to be there and show to our daughters that Women’s sport matters.
