Good luck to Paul Dunne today as he bids to win the Open Championship at St Andrews.
The Greystones Golf Club member has been the story of the weekend and could yet be the story of the year. He qualified to play at Golf’s oldest major only three weeks ago and now he stands on the brink of greatness, leading the field going into the final day on 12 under par.
His biggest rival could well be Jordan Spieth who has already won the Masters and the US Open and is one shot behind.
If Dunne beats Spieth into second there will be some consolation though in that Dunne will not be able to accept the €1.1 million prize money as he is an amateur. Instead the money will go to the runner up and Dunne will receive a ‘memento’. As well of course as world wide fame and an open door to the professional game and endorsements.
There was some double take’s going on yesterday as both Dunne and Spieth were clad in similar Under Armour Gear.
US commentators estimated that Dunne’s exposure of the brand alone was worth almost $2 Million but again, his amateur status means that he was not paid anything to wear the gear.
We hope at least he did not have to buy it, and that he will join Spieth in their roster of ambassadors should it all go well today.
