Rob Hartnett, Ryle Nugent, Simon Kelehan, Noel Quinn, David O'SheaSport for Business was live this morning, hosting a great debate on the Future of TV Sport on the set of the Sunday Game kindly made available for the morning by our friends at RTE Sport.

We kicked off with an overview of the history of innovation in broadcasting that stretched from The Columbia Lions in 1939 through an explosion of change with colour broadcast , action replays and slow motion coming within months of each other in 1955.

Things came right up to date with insight on how Major League Baseball Advanced Media has torn up the rules on broadcast and rights holders; how the NBA drew in 38.9 million live streams of last months final day of the regular season, in China alone; and how RTE and the GAA have taken on board lessons from elsewhere and made their own future perfect with the creation of GAAGo.

A high powered industry panel from the worlds of traditional and non traditional TV, as well as major rights holders included Ryle Nugent, Head of TV Sport at RTÉ, Simon Kelehan, Head of TV Content at eir, the new owners of Setanta; Noel Quinn, General Manager of GAAGo and David O’Shea who was behind the broadcast of the 2.5 Million viewed University Athletics event last month from Morton Stadium, one of the first events to be live streamed on Facebook.

We covered the issue of shared rights around the Euros, the importance of the quality of production and the programming around the live event.

Future of TV Sport Rob HartnettWe dived into the world of streaming and how there were different appetites, rules and markets for streams to as few as 300 all the way through to global audiences of billions.

Contributions from a knowledgable and engaged audience came from Mark Deering of Sky, Aine Healy of Vodafone and Drubha Banerjee fresh from the success of the first Road to Rio documentary.

The event was filmed by RTÉ and Sport for Business members will be able to look back on what was in the near future.

There was a great spark of networking and exchange of ideas before and after the early morning start with attendees from Sky, Vodafone, AIB, Sport Ireland, the GAA, Athletics Ireland, Horizon Sports Management, TVM, PSG Sponsorship, Atomic Sports, Wilson Hartnell, Nemeton TV, Failte Ireland, Horse Racing Ireland, the Gaelic Players Association, Cullen Communications, Strike Films and many more of our members..
