The University of Limerick played host over the weekend to one of the largest sporting events to be held in Ireland this year.

1,500 participants from 58 countries around the world took part in the Japan Karate Association World Championships which concluded last night.

Ireland won the bid to host these Championships in a competitive process over Norway, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.

The Championships only leave Japan once every six years and hosting in Ireland is a significant win for Ireland as a world class venue for major sporting events.

UL Sport hosted the event in the UL Arena working alongside JKA Ireland who put together the bid with help from Abbey Conference and Events and support from Fáilte Ireland

The event was live-streamed online and the action can be replayed from here.
