They say that those at the top of Gaelic Football are pulling further away from the chasing pack and there is evidence of that in the 45 names of nominees for the PwC All-Stars released this morning.
Dublin have a record 13 nominations with Mayo accounting for twelve. Those numbers are the biggest in fourteen years for the winners and the biggest in the qualifier era for the losers.
The remainder of the breakdown is Tyrone 6, Kerry 5, Roscommon, Kildare and Down each with 2 with Monaghan, Donegal, and Armagh completing the high-profile line-up with one nomination each.
The final 15 that make up the PwC All-Star Football team of 2017 will be announced live on RTÉ TV and will be presented with their coveted awards at a gala black-tie banquet in Dublin’s Convention Centre on Friday, November 3.
Leadership and the Lessons between sport and business will be a key theme of this year’s One-Zero event at Croke Park on Tuesday October 17th. Find out more at www.one-zero.com
The shortlist for this year’s Footballer of the Year and Young Footballer of the Year awards have also been nominated with four names put forward in the former, possibly to prevent the split of a vote between two players from one county letting another in, almost by default.
These overall awards are voted on by inter-county players who will choose between
Dublin’s James McCarthy and Stephen Cluxton and Mayo’s David Clarke and Andy Moran for the senior award, and Dublin’s Con O’Callaghan, Cork’s Sean Powter and Galway’s Michael Daly for the Young Player Award.
The GAA and GPA announced PwC as the new sponsors of the All-Star awards last week in a partnership that will run until 2020 and see the rebranding of the awards under the title of PwC All-Stars.
It could be anticipated that the advent next year of a Sup eight in place of Quarter-Finals might level out the field with regard to individual performers by giving them at least three shots in high-profile games as opposed to only one for those who have previously lost at that stage.
PwC, the GAA and the Gaelic Players Association are among the more than 220 organisations that play an active part of the Sport for Business community.
