Ireland’s involvement at the Euro Finals may have been brief and not altogether successful but the taste of European soccer will be enjoyed again for the four clubs in the Airtricity League who qualified for the Champions’ League and Europa League.
Shamrock Rovers will face Lithuanian champions FK Ekranas in the UEFA Champions League The first leg will be at Tallaght Stadium on July 17th or 18th.
In the UEFA Europa League First qualifying round draw, Bohemians and St Patrick’s Athletic each drew Icelandic opposition with the first leg taking place next week while Sligo Rovers will join the competition at the next stage against Slovakian side FC Spartak Trnava.  They will be at home in the second leg on July 26th.
It is hoped, especially given the recent demise of Monaghan United’s participation in the top flight, that some of the enthusiasm generated by the polish adventure will rub off in larger attendances at domestic soccer, particularly for these European fixtures.
