Sailing clubs and centres across England have secured over £1 million (€1.27 million) of funding through the second round of Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.
The funding will be used to refurbish changing rooms, build new pontoons and upgrade facilities at 24 sailing venues.
The fund is part of a scheme entitled Places People Play, Sport England’s programme to deliver a London 2012 legacy of increased mass participation in sport.  The programme will see investment of £50 million (€63.7 million) of National Lottery funding in up to 1000 community sports projects between 2011 and 2014.
Sailing in Ireland is currently enjoying a very high profile with the Volvo Ocean Race in Galway, the Four Star Pizza World Youth Championships on Dublin Bay and Providence Resources backing a strong Olympics team which hopes to bring back medals from the London 2012 Games.
The sport received just under €450,000 in core funding in the last round of Irish Sports Council funding as well as €600,000 towards the High performance programme, €220,000 in athlete grants and €21,000 through the Women in Sport initiative.
There are 71 ISA registered sailing clubs around the country.
