There will be numerous highlights on the night including the Morton Mile where there are more than a dozen sub four minute milers including O’Lionaird in advance of his travelling to London for the Olympic Games and Australian Olympian Ryan Gregson. The Women’s Mile includes six athletes making their final preparations in advance of the Olympic Games including Australian star Zoe Buckman.
One of the main stars on the night is likely to be US 800 metres medal hope Nick Symmonds. Symmonds is a big draw on the US circuit and is not afraid to speak his mind. Earlier this year, in protest against what he considered to be ‘absurd’ rules on personal promotion, he auctioned space on his right arm for a commercial temporary tattoo. When he runs in the Olympics he will have to cover this with tape but the fact that this is known makes the €11,000 which a US ad agency paid, look like reasonable value.
The Morton Games has not attracted a headline sponsor which is a shame given the profile so close to London but it has enabled smaller companies such as Behan and Associates, a specialist legal accountancy practice to grab a moment in the spotlight.
The night will also give an opportunity to younger athletes who may well feature at the Rio Olympics in four years. Chief among them is likely to be Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner from Dundrum South Dublin Athletics Club who has impressed at juvenile level in recent years.
