It is refreshing that even on the eve of the world’s biggest sporting festival, the stars of the Paralympic games which will follow the Olympics are remaining very much in the spotlight.
Hand cyclist Mark Rohan was on the interview circuit this week and came across as an athlete and a person of real quality and character.  Rohan is one of the athletes, together with Katie Taylor, to feature on the Sky Sports Scholarship programme.  He has received funding from the broadcaster which has enabled him to train full time for the games.
The scholarship has given a great profile to breakthrough athletes as well as preparing them for life in the spotlight.  Rohan appears to have had no problem in adjusting to the higher profile and as World number one is expected to perform well in London, hopefully delivering part of the five medal target set for the Irish team.
His mentor on the scholarship programme is Sean Fletcher who joined Sky Sports from the BBC last year and the two have forged a good relationship.
Rohan paid tribute to Renault in his interviews.  They have provided a car as part of their partnership with Paralympics Ireland, part of a very successful programme of commercial support that has enabled the team to prepare for the games in the best possible way.
The London 2012 Paralympic Games get underway on August 29th and run through to September 9th.  As a taste of what to expect, this video produced by Channel 4 in advance of its coverage gives a good insight.  Live coverage of the Games in Ireland will be provided free to air by Setanta.
