Today is the 20th Anniversary of Michael Carruth’s Gold and Wayne McCullough’s Silver medals at the Barcelona Olympics.
With Katie Taylor in action in her Lightweight semi final at 2pm, it could be another red letter day for the sport’s rich contribution to Irish Olympic history.  Paddy Barnes is also in action and a win in his quarter final would guarantee a fourth medal from London.
In a sporting festival where so many nations have gathered the conversation among strangers, when they realise where we are from has turned to our exploits in the ring.
It was right that Katie Taylor led the Irish team into the Olympic Arena 12 days ago.  We could barely have dreamed that the sport would still be leading the way with such verve and strength deep into the second week.
We know there are three medals coming home from London.  Today will determine whether at least one will be of a more precious metal than bronze.  Fingers crossed.
