Toyota marked one year until the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games yesterday by hosting a special session for dealers and customers with the World’s fastest Paralympian Jason Smyth.

The brand is an official Olympic and Paralympic Partner and also has an Irish partnership specific to Paralympics Ireland.

Smyth will shortly feature in a special documentary video produced by the Olympic Channel looking at whether it will be possible for a Paralympic athlete to dip below ten seconds for the 100 metres.

Smyth is the only Irish athelete among the eight to feature and also the only Paralympian. it will put him in front of a massive global audience and when the video is released we will bring it to you here on Sport for Business.

“I have had a brilliant career, which really could not have gone any better and I am feeling in good shape ahead of the World Championships in Doha and then building up to Tokyo,” he said.

“Obviously though the older you get the more you have to think about what might come next.”

“Life priorities change. I moved back from the US to London and we have two young children now so that prompted a move back to Northern Ireland and life is good.”

“It does make training a bit trickier though, finding time between your commitments to family and the weather here is not quite as good as in Florida.”

He has taken on board positions with Vision Sport Ireland and Netball NI in order to expand his own expertise but at the moment he remains focused on the track as opposed to what he might do afterwards.

“I’ve ruled out a few more things than I’ve ruled in but it’s all a learning experience. As it stands a blank sheet of paper on what I might end up doing would be a bit scary, to be honest, but I am preparing for it.”

“I still feel there is more to come though. I ran my fastest time in the last three years last month and I feel there is more in me.”

“I’m not sure that coaching would be for me because sprinting is quite technical and with my visual impairment I may not be the best person to identify the smallest of things but anything is possible.”

Join us next week when we will be chatting with Zoe Bradley of Toyota on how they are planning to bring their partnership with the Olympics and Paralympics to life in the irish market over the next twelve months.
