There was relief for Sport in yesterday’s budget when Minister Leo Varadkar announced after the main speeches that the forecast cut of 5% in funding to the Irish Sports Council was to be reduced to 2.9%.
This does continue the downward trend but with performance funding likely to bear the brunt having been spared in 2012, it is likely that core funding for grassroots and participation programmes, will be maintained.
“The boxers, paralympians, individual athletes, our national teams and local and county sportspeople lifted the nation’s spirits throughout the year. We are immensely grateful for that as a nation. Moreover, rising levels of participation in sport suggest that our policies are working and investment in sport is producing a real return,” said the Minister.
Later today we will continue our look at how individual sports fared in last week’s Capital Grants when we turn the attention on Munster.  Find out which sport dominated with three times the funding achieved by its colleagues in Dublin despite a slightly smaller overall population.
